November in Your Garden

Posted by Allison Pezzack on

With old man winter on his way, there are fewer and fewer days to enjoy your garden before the snow or bitter cold arrive. So enjoy these last few fall days in your garden getting ready for next spring.

Get rid of weeds in pathways and driveways. Here's a simple, biodegradable recipe for getting rid of pesky plants in the cracks.

    • Pour 1 gallon of white vinegar into a bucket. ...
    • Add 1 cup of table salt. ...
    • Stir in 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap. ...
    • Funnel the weed killer into a plastic spray bottle and spray directly onto the weeds.

Cut back dead plants. Chop dead plant matter into small pieces and dig them into the flower bed, or add them to your compost pile. For tall grasses, or seed heads, leave them standing to provide food and shelter for wintering birds.

Plant your spring bulbs… as long as the ground isn’t frozen, it’s not too late to plant bulbs for a bright, blooming spring garden. You’ll be helping out the bees, too, as these plants are often the first food for friendly pollinators.

Help backyard wildlife prepare for winter. Get your birdfeeder cleaned and filled, and clean out any birdbaths.
