Orchids - the Drama Queens of the plant world

Posted by Allison Pezzack on

Orchids are so beautiful, it’s hard to resist buying them whenever we see them in stores. But they’re notorious drama queens and need specific care to thrive. After hours of research, this is what Dig It® has been able to learn about not killing orchids.

  1. Orchids need bright, indirect light. East or west-facing windows are best.
  2. In nature, orchids are parasites, growing on the bark of trees. Plant them in a pot of nice, loose bark where they can cling on happily without suffocating. Use your Dig It® gloves when handling the bark pieces so that dirt and debris don’t get under your nails.
  3. Orchids hate having wet roots. Just like people don’t like wet feet. Give them a pot with large drainage holes and add a layer of pebbles to the bottom of the pot.
  4. During the Summer (their growing season) add liquid fertilizer to water every three weeks.

Once they’re all set up, you should leave your orchids alone as much as possible. Like every Diva, they need time alone to thrive, but then when they finally make it on stage, they’ll steal the spotlight.
